Dear Readers,

'The important thing is not to stop asking questions' Albert Einstein

This volume inaugurates the series of Monographs of 'l'Oculista italiano'.

We have always been convinced that only by sharing knowledge and comparing ideas is it possible to contribute to the advancement of knowledge. In order to take up this challenge and continue on the long road we have embarked upon, we cannot ignore where we start from.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration is an increasingly common disease due to the progressive ageing of the population, it still remains the leading cause of legal blindness in the developed world. The choice of addressing this topic as the inaugural theme of our Monograph is a confirmation of the vocation that has always distinguished the Italian Ophthalmologist magazine, our duty to inform.

The authors, who were invited to take part in our initiative, proposed papers to us that contain a kind of 'snapshot' of the knowledge and scientific cultural heritage we possess today on the subject of AMD and the related therapeutic and re-educational approaches.

I would therefore like to thank everyone for their expertise, commitment and willingness to help in the realisation of this work.

A special thank you goes to Alfredo Pece, who played the role of scientific coordinator impeccably, from the project start-up phases to the harmonisation of all that we present to you today.
